Wireless multimedia server OvisLinkThe OvisLink WMU-9000 VPN is an interesting combination of a wireless multimedia server and VPN router functions combining. This device supports the functions of IEEE 802.11g standard and it can be used for the implementation of the four ports multimedia communication server in the10/100 modes with an ability for the packages filtering. You can also use the machine as a print-server of a web-camera server, FTP server, VPN server or e-mil monitoring.
The devices have a convenient modern design; there are indicators on the front panel for a power supply, a status, a PPPoE, an e-mail monitoring, an activity of the wireless connection and an activity on the WAN port or on each one of the four LAN ports. There are four LAN ports, one WAN port, four USB ports, a power supply cutoff point and a Reset button on the back panel.
OvisLink has technical parameters that are sufficient for performing the wireless multimedia server functions. It uses a new processor Brecis 2006 MIPS with a 170 MHz clock rate. Not long time ago this processor was only a project and it was not available; thus, there is not much information concerning this module.
The system provides 8 MB Flash memory and 32 MB SDRAM memory. There are two microchips M12L128168A-7T, each one of 16 MB.
The USB interface is implemented as four ports USB host controller. The system also has an Ethernet switch.
The wireless interface is built with a mini-PCI card with the chips of the Intersil Company, though they are not involved in the development of such solutions anymore.
A high length of antenna cable for this wireless multimedia server is very attractive and useful.
There are some specific configuration features, such as an absence of the firewall configuration by the assignment address, a disability of work in a router mode, an ability to save detailed logs, distributed by the groups with a color selection. However, the multimedia wireless server does not provide an opportunity to store logs at the external log server. There are big opportunities for work with a web camera. Functions as a movement detection, a scheduled switching on, an ability to set up a quality of the service parameter (restricting a traffic speed, depending on the assigned priority) are included. There are also indicators of the mail monitoring. The mail monitoring service allows to check the incoming e-mail on the server for the letters from certain addresses. Thus, if you are waiting for important letters, the indicators will show when it arrives in your mail box. You are able to setup e-mail checking from six senders in six mail boxes.
The multimedia server permits kicking a user, who entered the web interface via the web interface. This function is available for administrators only. An interface of the wireless multimedia server supports popular web browsers Mozilla 1.0, Netscape 7.0, Internet Explorer 6.0. It may work incorrectly, when other browsers are used; for instance, there are problems with Opera.
The OvisLink WMU-9000 VPN provides basic functions of the multimedia server. It can be good for home or small offices purposes. Compact sizes, a pleasant price and rich functionality make this device very attractive for users.
