Toshiba Magnia 3300r

Added: 12/17/2005

The Toshiba servers are taking a higher position in this industry during the last years. There are some models for home and enterprise purposes as well. The GC20 and 3300r are popular representatives of this family that can carry out all the server's responsibilities with a high performance level. Toshiba servers could be used with desktop computers the same way as with notebooks. This is a unique property of the Toshiba hardware.

A home server from Toshiba Magnia GG20 is a very interesting proposition that has a quite low price and high abilities. Somebody treats the Toshiba Magnia as an additional device, though you have to keep in mind that it is a real server on the base of a notebook.

Actually, Toshiba is one of the most successful notebooks producers, since their solutions in this area are known for originality and efficiency.

The Toshiba Magnia is a perfect implementation of a notebook server. In this way you can make your mobile computer a powerful system for an efficient business and multi-media data processing.

As an example of the configuration you can try to connect the Toshiba Magnia to the notebook IBM ThinkPad 770ED with the operation system RedHat Linux 9.0 in the minimal server configuration. The Hardware implementation of this device is very compact and simple. Usually, it is not larger than a usual notebook. There are two standard 2" hard disks under the attached cover. In the standard configuration the Toshiba Magnia uses the 20 GB Winchesters IBM TravelStar.

The server works with the wireless network via cards of the wireless access MN-520. The installation of the drivers for these cards is enough to start a connection under Windows XP. Therefore, if you work with Linux, then you should perform some manipulations to make it work. As a matter of fact, the problem could be solved by an appending command "cardmgr ident" to the system configuration file /etc/pcmcia/config.

It is not possible to start the system with the inserted AGP video card due to the constructive features. However, you can connect the IDE device to the mounted device.

The Toshiba Magnia is a good platform as a home server. The developers achieved a good combination of the geometrical parameters and performance. As a disadvantage, there is no opportunity for a start up in extreme conditions i.e. the console is not available. This feature makes the installation of another operation system impossible.

The Toshiba Magnia 3300r is another representative of the servers' family, since it is developed for other purposes. This is a 2U height server, which is oriented for the working group solutions market. This machine could be listed in the class of the rack mounted servers.

The system has six modules for power storage devices. One for a floppy drive, one for a CD-ROM drive and there are also four modules for the devices Single Connection Attach (SCA) with a hot replacing function support. The server supports the specifications Ultra2 LVD SCSI as well. There is an opportunity to extend standard memory ECC SDRAM up to 2 GB. The server includes a storage capacity up to 72 GB. In addition, this computer has an integrated support for Ethernet 10/100 and two slots of 32 digits PCI bus for 33 MHz. There is also a USB bus with the protocol 2.0 version support. This model uses processors Intel Xeon with a clock rate from 1.80 up to 2.8 GHz.

The initial cost of the Toshiba Magnia 3300r in a standard configuration is four thousand and a half dollars. The extended configuration with two processors Intel Xeon costs about twenty thousand dollars. This configuration contains a RAID controller and a memory volume up to 512 MB.
