The speed of a network printer's work is its main quality. A higher printing speed means a higher monthly norm of printing jobs and a cheaper exploiting. A user needs a high quality and a speed of printing. At the same time, system administrators need reliability, simple tools for installation and configuring and an opportunity to use the device in any environment.
The workgroup printer can process a loading of small offices networks. Therefore, enterprise level networks require printing devices with an external print server support and a wide set of tools for work with paper. Many big companies, such as Dataproducts, GENICOM, Hewlett-Packard, Konica Business Machines USA and Olympus America, produce such printers that guarantee the printing speed from thirty to fifty pages per minute in a high performance monochrome mode.
The Printer Typhoon 30 from the Dataproducts Company has good network properties. It is good for using in heterogeneous networks.
The Virtual Printer Technology (VPT) is basic for the printer's network properties. It allows to create sixty four virtual printers and each one can have its own configuration. With the VPT technology a system administrator can configure Typhoon 30 to meet different requirements for the documents printing. For instance, there may be different virtual printers for diverse configuration parameters, such as a paper format, a set of fonts and emulation for the pages description language. This printer's property is useful, when the network computers do not have tools for printing jobs formatting. In this case users can send their jobs to the virtual printers with a required configuration.
Typhoon 30 does not support an automatic re-switching between different tasks in PostScript and PCL 5e formats. The printer with the external print server can handle print jobs in these formats, sent from computers that are working under the operation systems System 7 and Windows 95, which are connected to the server NetWare and Windows NT.
Typhoon 30 has many tools for connecting to separate a computer or external print servers. It contains serial and parallel ports and it can be provided with the network interfaces Ethernet, Token Ring or LocalTalk. This printer has a parallel interface for connecting with the external print server.
A connection with Unix, Windows NT and LAN Manager servers are performed by TCP/IP protocols. The printer is compatible with the operation systems NetWare 3.12 and 4.1x. Therefore, its tools do not support the NDS NetWare 4.1 service and this operation system should work in a bindery emulation mode. Simultaneously, you should not always use the third company printing server for the NDS support. A connection of Typhoon 30 with Macintosh computers by the Apple Corporation can be performed by the AppleTalk in the networks Ethernet, Token Ring or LocalTalk.
Typhoon 30 has a remote console facility tool that is available via the telnet or the serial interface. This utility is compatible with the Windows 3.1 and Windows NT and can become a considerable advantage for this printer if its speed is improved to a higher rank.
